Zurkhaneh Tour (Paid Walking Tour)

Zurkhaneh tour

Zurkhaneh, meaning the home of strength, is a traditional Iranian style gym, where athletes exercise ancient sport or Varzesh-e Bastani inside there. Zurkhaneh was the main place for wrestling until the mid-20th century. Then, it was replaced by international wrestling. After that, the other rituals have been continued by athletes. In Zurkhaneh Tour we try to show you one of the hidden parts of Iranian life.

This sport is a symbol of fairness and seniority. Athletes in Zurkhaneh are accompanied by a live traditional song and music by a person, who seats at an elevated and decorated area, who’s name is Morshed. He plays a drum and chants Persian poetry. This is one of the most attractive and unique parts of this sport.

When you enter Zurkhaneh by a low door, you need to bow in respect while entering. Gowd, a hexagonal sunken area with one-meter depth is located in the middle of the room. The ancient gym is taken place at the Gowd.

Athletes enter the Gowd by the permission of the Morshed.

Persian Walk proudly runs the Zurkhaneh tour on Sunday & Tuesday evening and Friday Morning in Tehran.
